Description: The Early Language Learning (ELL) project was an innovative project funded by IRCC between 2018-2020. The project was a pilot and was implemented at two sites: in Toronto by Working Women’s Community Centre and in Vancouver by ISS of BC. Mothers Matter Centre (MMC) supported coordination, quality control, capacity building and documentation for the pilot. ELL added language learning support for low-income, isolated and marginalized refugee and immigrant women who took part in Mothers Matter Centre’s flagship program called HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters). These women were not enrolled in LINC and required a structures intervention to support them in their settlement in Canada. ELL provided mothers with structure, capacity, tools and confidence to learn and use the English language. The project developed a comprehensive skill using task-based curriculum designed for use with pre-literacy, CLB 1, 2 and 3 clients. The presentation will reflect on key results from the pilot and will provide an overview of the ELL curriculum and how other actors can access and use this free comprehensive high-quality resource.
